The overal project scope is a comprehensive renovation to an existing brownstone situated in the Upper West side of Manhattan. My key responsibility revolved around designing and detailing the rooftop fireplace and surrounding elements. Throughout the project, notably on the rootop, there is a consistent reptition of horizontally emphasized elements such as the wood storage, green wall, and the datum line of the railing and coping. The goal was to maintain that horizontality while effectivley concealing the vents and stacks.
The fireplace can be dissected into three components - the hearth, the firebox + surround, and the flue + vent concealer. Within each of these components, we explored a diverse interplay of forms, materials, and spacing, offering a multitude of creative options to shape the overall design of the fireplace.
